SUMMARY:Nocturnes: Five Ballets
DESCRIPTION:Brilliant\, bold\, and not to be missed—Pointeworks returns to The Conrad this summer with Nocturnes: Five Ballets\, an evening of extraordinary dance and live music. Curated by Artistic Director Sophie Williams\, Season Three brings together world-class artists from across the country in a dynamic program choreographed entirely by women. \nThe performance features two world premieres: Jacquelyn Long’s new ballet\, Moving Forces\, with an original score by award-winning composer Katie Jenkins\, performed live by virtuosic pianist Joshua Mhoon and violinist Julia Choi\, and a new creation by acclaimed choreographer Keerati Jinakunwiphat\, a 2023 Princess Grace Award winner and the first Asian American woman commissioned to create for New York City Ballet. \nThe heart of Nocturnes lies in three ballets that illuminate love in its many forms. Audiences will experience the Northern Hemisphere premiere of Andrea Schermoly’s Romeo and Juliet\, a poetic reimagining of Shakespeare’s timeless romance; Dani Rowe’s Unsaid\, staged by the legendary Sofiane Sylve and hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “another dark heartbreaker” that earned a standing ovation; and the return of Reka Gyulai’s Transcendence\, which enthralled audiences last season with its sweeping imagery and powerful exploration of love’s endurance. \nWith groundbreaking premieres\, richly imagined love stories\, and commanding contemporary works\, Nocturnes expands the boundaries of ballet—making dance more relevant\, immersive\, and electrifying than ever.

SUMMARY:ChoreoLAB: Merging Influences
DESCRIPTION:ChoreoLABs are workshops that explore the art of dance making. We introduce and explore various choreographic tools that help dance makers generate their own authentic movement\, find new ways to synthesize phrases\, and hone compositional skills. Open to dance artists of all genres and levels\, these workshops encourage participants to develop their own choreographic voice. \nIn ChoreoLAB: MERGING INFLUENCES\, we’ll play with our choreographic toolbox while looking through the lens of heritage and culture. We’ll explore movement generation\, using various tools and prompts. We’ll look at ways to manipulate our own movements. We’ll create short phrases and share them\, and then discuss our outcomes and learnings. Together\, we’ll explore how cultural identity can influence our dance making\, regardless of our practiced dance form. \nThings to Bring \n\nPen/pencil and notebook (or something to take notes on).\nSuggest a phone or something to video record yourself\, but not required.\nWater and snacks – we will have short breaks.\nWear comfortable clothing and be prepared for movement.\nNo outside shoes in the studio – bare feet\, socks\, or studio only shoes.\nJoyce Lien Kushner is of Taiwanese descent and will be using examples from her heritage. If interested in exploring your own cultural heritage\, please bring:\n\nshort poem or literature passage from your heritage\nlinks to videos of traditional dances from your heritage (2 videos should suffice)

SUMMARY:Relational Body – Contact Improvisation workshop-
DESCRIPTION:Argentinian teacher Jonathan Brussolo is traveling through San Diego and we have a special opportunity to learn from him! \nFrom Jonathan\n“In these classes we will consider our attention as a resource that allows us a finer and more sensitive awareness of our bodies\, and from which we can explore the different systems and structures of our anatomy\, awakening greater presence and awareness in our physicalities… \nwhat we feel becomes present. \nWe will explore how refining our attention can establish a dialogue between physical sensations and relational perception. In the constant dialogue between internal and external perception\, perhaps the distinction between them can begin to dissolve. \nFrom this basis we will enter into movement\, the encounter with space\, and bodies as spaces of dance. Inhabiting ourselves\, we will allow ourselves to be danced by the encounter. We will see dance and contact as a river of information that enters and leaves our bodies\, connecting us with the planet and its inherent forces.” \nhttps://forms.gle/Qfh3RoXYeeNgdmQ29

SUMMARY:POP IN / POP OUT: Beginner/Open Level Contemporary Partnering with Ilyana and Iverson
DESCRIPTION:Beginner/Open Level Contemporary Partnering is a partnering workshop rooted in touch and improv. We will take a non-gender focused approach to partnering rooted in mutual weight sharing between both parties. This class is available to dancers who have worked together before as well as those looking to get into partnering. (feel free to come without a partner!) \nClass will begin with a brief warmup\, followed by dedicated time to pair up and discuss consent with your partners before we move into the partnering portion of class. We’ll move and groove together in a guided touch-based improv session before moving into a series of set exercises based in weight sharing\, designed to gain trust and comfortability with your partner. Feel free to bring a notebook\, as we’ll take some time mid-workshop to share our thoughts. We’ll end class with a final combo and another opportunity to reflect and share our thoughts and feelings!\n \nIlyana Carlee (she/her) \n\nOriginally from Dayton\, Ohio\, Ilyana Carlee is a performer\, choreographer\, and teacher in San Diego. Since a young age\, she has trained at various studios\, her most influential training being under DeShona Pepper Robertson at Stivers School for the Arts. Ilyana continued her dance training and choreographic exploration at Howard University\, earning a BFA in Dance. Since moving to San Diego in 2023\, she has trained at DISCO RIOT\, Malashock Dance\, and San Diego Dance Theater\, and has performed with DISCO RIOT\, San Diego Dance Theater and NACHMO. Most recently\, she was an intern in the (R)Evolution Artist Program with DISCO RIOT\, and is currently a founding collaborator with Negative Space Dance Collective. Her art is deeply influenced by her experiences as a Black woman. She is inspired by both her ancestral lineage and surroundings\, creating work inspired by love\, grief\, community\, and the Black experience. \nIverson “Nosrevi” Harding (he/him) \nIverson “Nosrevi” Harding has been moving and creating through physicalization for thirteen years. He is trained in an abundance of styles not limited to ballet\, modern\, contemporary\, tap and hip hop. Graduating from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle\, WA circa spring of 2024 he has evolved in his personal style which is a mixture of hip hop\, contemporary and tap dance. His movement has a melancholy yet sharp qualities that excite the satisfaction factor made in one’s eyes and brain. His teaching style is based more on having an understanding of the music so therefore he can translate the quality of movement better and if that doesn’t help\, he’ll try and find a hundred other ways to get you to succeed.

SUMMARY:San Diego Tap & Jazz Dance Festival
DESCRIPTION:The San Diego Tap & Jazz Dance Festival is an annual celebration of tap dance\, jazz music\, rhythm\, culture\, and community held in San Diego the weekend before Thanksgiving. Presented by San Diego Tap & Jazz\, the festival brings together dancers\, musicians\, educators\, and artists of all ages and experience levels for a vibrant weekend of classes\, live music\, performances\, jam sessions\, social dancing\, and community connection.\n\nRooted in the rich traditions of African American art forms\, the festival honors the history and legacy of tap and jazz while creating an inclusive and welcoming space for learning\, creativity\, collaboration\, and artistic expression. Participants have the opportunity to study with inspiring artists\, experience live jazz music\, and celebrate the joy of rhythm in a supportive community environment.\n\nFestival highlights include a Faculty Concert featuring live jazz musicians accompanying the festival’s teaching artists in an exciting evening of rhythm\, improvisation\, collaboration\, and performance. The festival also includes a Community Dance and Student Showcase\, celebrating emerging artists\, local talent\, youth performers\, and the greater dance community in an uplifting and inspiring performance setting.\n\nThe festival takes place at Keiller Leadership Academy\, a nonprofit free public charter school located in the Encanto community of Southeast San Diego. Hosting the festival within a school and community-centered environment reflects the festival’s mission of accessibility\, education\, cultural preservation\, and artistic opportunity for all ages.\n\nThe 2026 San Diego Tap & Jazz Dance Festival will take place November 21–22\, 2026\, in San Diego\, California. The festival is open to dancers\, musicians\, students\, educators\, and community members who share a love for rhythm\, movement\, jazz culture\, and the performing arts.
