SUMMARY:The Gathering
DESCRIPTION:The Gathering is a showcase event highlighting choreography\, community\, and creativity. Each performance is a uniquely curated sample of San Diego’s dance companies and artists. This event\, co-produced by Ballet Counterpointe and West Coast Dance Complex\, offers artists and audience members alike a chance to engage with one another in an intimate\, interactive format that encourages conversation and discovery. \nA community that dances together\, grows together. With this symbiotic relationship in mind\, ticket proceeds will fund emerging choreographers through the Orion Choreographic Fellowship. Awardees will have the opportunity for their work to be shown at future Gathering performances and to share their works in progress with the community’s support. \nWith The Gathering\, Ballet Counterpointe brings the members of the San Diego dance community together and provides a space where we can all appreciate and learn from each other’s work. A ticket offers you an up-close and personal experience with emerging and established artists. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with San Diego’s multifaceted dance culture.

SUMMARY:Summer ChoreoWreck 2026
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nOur two AADF2026 Collaborative Residency choreographers Forest Lee and Hannah Joo are offering up their works-in-progress to the “wrecking” process as part of their choreographic research. They will play with each other’s work and remake it live\, in front of an audience! Dance artists Adie San Diego and Odessa Uno are also invited to “wreck” the residents’ works. This is a rare opportunity for audiences to witness the creative process of dance making. Learn more about “wrecking”. \nThe Process\nEach “wreckee” has 2 hours to go through the entire wrecking process (two wreckings each). The wreckee first presents the original work. Then their “wreckers” will get 45 minutes each to remake the dance on the wreckee\, followed by a showing of that remake. After each wreckee’s full session\, there will be a short “talk back” with artists and audience. \nThere is a 55 minute lunch break between the two wreckee sessions. \nFree event…come & go as you please!\nSummer ChoreoWreck 2026 is offered free to the public (suggested $10 donation) – RSVP requested due to capacity limitations \nThroughout the entire event\, audiences are welcome to come and go – pick and choose which sessions you’d like to watch\, take a break whenever you need\, stay for the whole event! Wristbands will be provided for re-entry. \nSummer ChoreoWreck is made possible with the generous sponsorship of studio space by Malashock Dance and funded in part by City of San Diego Cultural Affairs. \nSchedule of Events\n10:00am: Greetings & Introduction\n10:15am: Wreckee Session #1 – Forest Lee\n12:15pm: Wreckee Session #1 Talk Back\n12:35m: Break\n1:30pm: Re-introduction of Wrecking\n1:40pm: Wreckee Session #2 – Hannah Joo\n3:40pm: Wreckee Session #2 Talk Back

SUMMARY:LAB: Taichi (Open Level)
DESCRIPTION:This is an open level class which focuses on exploring key concepts and theories of Taichi (太極). Inducted as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020 by UNESCO\, this ancient Chinese martial art dates back 2000 years and is widely practiced today as a health exercise. Students will explore foundational concepts like silk pulling/reeling(纏/抽)\, sinking (沉)\, and relaxing (松). Along with Xingyi (形意) and Bagua (八卦)\, Taichi is classified as one of the three main internal martial art styles. These three styles focus on power generation through proper postural alignment and strong stance work. Students will also learn about how health and medicine tie in with Taichi and the importance of Qi (氣) cultivation. \nThis class is tailored for dancers\, movers\, and anyone interested in learning more about Taichi theory\, culture\, and history. \n*Recommendation: Students should wear comfortable clothes and bring water. Shoes are optional for this class (low-soled shoes are recommended if students do decide to wear them).\n \nMATTHEW TAY\nAn American Born Chinese (ABC) raised in the San Gabriel Valley in LA\, Dr. Matthew Tay is a movement and martial arts educator. Holding a Doctorate of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine (DACM) and an alumni of UCSD Dance\, Matthew explores movement through the intersection of medicine\, martial arts\, and dance. His passion for Taichi stems from his journey to find his cultural heritage and roots. As a former USA Wushu Team member\, Matthew still continues to compete semi-professionally but has shifted more to teaching. His goal is to share his knowledge of Taichi and Wushu and provide depth and nuance to these artforms.

SUMMARY:POP IN / POP OUT: Beginner/Open Level Contemporary Partnering with Ilyana and Iverson
DESCRIPTION:Beginner/Open Level Contemporary Partnering is a partnering workshop rooted in touch and improv. We will take a non-gender focused approach to partnering rooted in mutual weight sharing between both parties. This class is available to dancers who have worked together before as well as those looking to get into partnering. (feel free to come without a partner!) \nClass will begin with a brief warmup\, followed by dedicated time to pair up and discuss consent with your partners before we move into the partnering portion of class. We’ll move and groove together in a guided touch-based improv session before moving into a series of set exercises based in weight sharing\, designed to gain trust and comfortability with your partner. Feel free to bring a notebook\, as we’ll take some time mid-workshop to share our thoughts. We’ll end class with a final combo and another opportunity to reflect and share our thoughts and feelings!\n \nIlyana Carlee (she/her) \n\nOriginally from Dayton\, Ohio\, Ilyana Carlee is a performer\, choreographer\, and teacher in San Diego. Since a young age\, she has trained at various studios\, her most influential training being under DeShona Pepper Robertson at Stivers School for the Arts. Ilyana continued her dance training and choreographic exploration at Howard University\, earning a BFA in Dance. Since moving to San Diego in 2023\, she has trained at DISCO RIOT\, Malashock Dance\, and San Diego Dance Theater\, and has performed with DISCO RIOT\, San Diego Dance Theater and NACHMO. Most recently\, she was an intern in the (R)Evolution Artist Program with DISCO RIOT\, and is currently a founding collaborator with Negative Space Dance Collective. Her art is deeply influenced by her experiences as a Black woman. She is inspired by both her ancestral lineage and surroundings\, creating work inspired by love\, grief\, community\, and the Black experience. \nIverson “Nosrevi” Harding (he/him) \nIverson “Nosrevi” Harding has been moving and creating through physicalization for thirteen years. He is trained in an abundance of styles not limited to ballet\, modern\, contemporary\, tap and hip hop. Graduating from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle\, WA circa spring of 2024 he has evolved in his personal style which is a mixture of hip hop\, contemporary and tap dance. His movement has a melancholy yet sharp qualities that excite the satisfaction factor made in one’s eyes and brain. His teaching style is based more on having an understanding of the music so therefore he can translate the quality of movement better and if that doesn’t help\, he’ll try and find a hundred other ways to get you to succeed.
