SUMMARY:ChoreoLAB: Merging Influences
DESCRIPTION:ChoreoLABs are workshops that explore the art of dance making. We introduce and explore various choreographic tools that help dance makers generate their own authentic movement\, find new ways to synthesize phrases\, and hone compositional skills. Open to dance artists of all genres and levels\, these workshops encourage participants to develop their own choreographic voice. \nIn ChoreoLAB: MERGING INFLUENCES\, we’ll play with our choreographic toolbox while looking through the lens of heritage and culture. We’ll explore movement generation\, using various tools and prompts. We’ll look at ways to manipulate our own movements. We’ll create short phrases and share them\, and then discuss our outcomes and learnings. Together\, we’ll explore how cultural identity can influence our dance making\, regardless of our practiced dance form. \nThings to Bring \n\nPen/pencil and notebook (or something to take notes on).\nSuggest a phone or something to video record yourself\, but not required.\nWater and snacks – we will have short breaks.\nWear comfortable clothing and be prepared for movement.\nNo outside shoes in the studio – bare feet\, socks\, or studio only shoes.\nJoyce Lien Kushner is of Taiwanese descent and will be using examples from her heritage. If interested in exploring your own cultural heritage\, please bring:\n\nshort poem or literature passage from your heritage\nlinks to videos of traditional dances from your heritage (2 videos should suffice)

SUMMARY:Nocturnes: Five Ballets
DESCRIPTION:Brilliant\, bold\, and not to be missed—Pointeworks returns to The Conrad this summer with Nocturnes: Five Ballets\, an evening of extraordinary dance and live music. Curated by Artistic Director Sophie Williams\, Season Three brings together world-class artists from across the country in a dynamic program choreographed entirely by women. \nThe performance features two world premieres: Jacquelyn Long’s new ballet\, Moving Forces\, with an original score by award-winning composer Katie Jenkins\, performed live by virtuosic pianist Joshua Mhoon and violinist Julia Choi\, and a new creation by acclaimed choreographer Keerati Jinakunwiphat\, a 2023 Princess Grace Award winner and the first Asian American woman commissioned to create for New York City Ballet. \nThe heart of Nocturnes lies in three ballets that illuminate love in its many forms. Audiences will experience the Northern Hemisphere premiere of Andrea Schermoly’s Romeo and Juliet\, a poetic reimagining of Shakespeare’s timeless romance; Dani Rowe’s Unsaid\, staged by the legendary Sofiane Sylve and hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “another dark heartbreaker” that earned a standing ovation; and the return of Reka Gyulai’s Transcendence\, which enthralled audiences last season with its sweeping imagery and powerful exploration of love’s endurance. \nWith groundbreaking premieres\, richly imagined love stories\, and commanding contemporary works\, Nocturnes expands the boundaries of ballet—making dance more relevant\, immersive\, and electrifying than ever.

SUMMARY:LAB: Graham-based Modern (Beg)
DESCRIPTION:This beginning level modern dance workshop is rooted in Graham technique. We begin with a short warm-up to help lengthen and ground our bodies. We then introduce the codified Graham exercises\, beginning with floor exercises – bounces\, breathings\, spirals in 3s & 6s\, seated contractions\, deep stretches\, turns around the back\, pleadings\, etc. Transitioning to standing\, we move to center work – plies\, brushes\, changes around the ankle\, and a center combination. As time allows\, we’ll end with exercises and phrases across the floor – triplets\, prances\, jumps\, etc. Through focus on technique\, we’ll develop strength and deeper understanding of Graham technique\, which has its own unique movement language. \nThis class is geared towards both beginning dancers and more experienced dancers who are new to Graham technique. \n*Recommendation – If you have difficulty sitting on the floor with your back straight up and legs extended out in front\, we recommend that you bring a yoga mat or towel/blanket. These items may be folded and placed under the seat for floor exercise modifications.

SUMMARY:The Art of Kunt-Fu: Intro to Queer Combat and Dance with Devante Love
DESCRIPTION:Blending spiritualized martial arts\, queer qigong\, voguing\, and Afro-Asian indigenous healing philosophy\, this workshop teaches self-defense disguised as a queer dance. The workshop thinks with Ball culture as a site where dance builds resilience against white cis-heteropatriarchy. Movers also learn breathing patterns and sensory awareness techniques to enter spaces with heightened confidence and courage to be queer. Moving beyond the machismo of traditional martial arts\, this practice centers a cunty femme expressivity that empowers queer bodies to protect each other. All bodies\, abilities\, and experience levels welcome. Modifications offered throughout to emphasize principles over perfect form.

SUMMARY:MORNING EXORCISE with Jas Lin + Hearthealer
DESCRIPTION:MORNING as in awakening– to our senses\, our agency\, our infinite possibility.\nEXORCISE as in ritual and practice– for purging the body of internalized scripts and socialized expectations. \nMORNING EXORCISE is an open movement workshop for all levels of experience\, accompanying Jas Lin and Hearthealer’s Prayer Pillow performance for Queer Mvmt Fest. Through qigong breathwork\, movement meditation\, and embodiment tasks\, we exorcise choreographies of the learned body\, shedding ingrained patterns to make space for new ways of moving through\, being with\, and dreaming into. Participants are invited to release any expectation that there is a “proper” way to move or be\, and instead follow feeling\, sensation\, and instinct. Together\, we co-create a sanctuary for experimentation\, mutual presence\, and collective transformation.

SUMMARY:The Rhythm of the Heartbeat with Azul Lopez
DESCRIPTION:I will center the movement that keeps us alive\, our heartbeat\, and represent it by playing my medicine drum. I will facilitate breathwork\, guided gentle movement that can be done sitting\, laying\, or standing. I will invite people to move intuitively towards the end of class. This class doesn’t require any previous experience or specific abilities. Everything I guide will be offered as invitations and the ultimate encouragement is for participants to sense for guidance from their bodies. I will also invite people to connect to their ancestry\, as many cultures have connected to the medicine of the drum.

SUMMARY:OPEN REHEARSAL: KEERATI JINAKUNWIPHAT NEW WORK
DESCRIPTION:Join Pointeworks for an in-studio open rehearsal of a new work by decorated emerging choreographic voice Keerati Jinakunwiphat. After just one week in the studio\, experience the early stages of her ballet in creation and gain insight into the choreographic process. \nPAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN TICKETS.\nOPEN TO ALL AGES.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve Your Seats & More Info\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome to our Pointeworks creative space\, where dancers and choreographers can collaborate at the highest level. \nStep into the studio for this is a rare opportunity to witness the early stages of a ballet in development—where ideas are still evolving\, movement is being shaped\, and the creative process is fully visible. \nAs a choreographer\, Jinakunwiphat’s work centers on community\, connection\, and identity\, drawing from her experience as a Thai-American artist navigating multiple cultural perspectives. Her process emphasizes collaboration and exploration\, asking how we relate to one another through movement. \nThis event offers a unique window into that process—inviting audiences to engage not just with the final product\, but with the making of the work itself. \nABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHER\nKeerati Jinakunwiphat is a New York City–based choreographer and dance artist\, originally from Chicago. A recipient of the Princess Grace Award in Choreography\, Jinakunwiphat was named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” and is a current Artist in Residence at the 92NY Harkness Dance Center. \nShe has collaborated with leading contemporary artists including Kyle Abraham\, Trisha Brown\, and Doug Varone\, and has created works for companies and institutions across the U.S. \nIn 2023\, she became the first Asian American woman commissioned by New York City Ballet\, creating Fortuitous Ash with music by Du Yun. Her choreography has been presented at venues including Lincoln Center\, The Joyce Theater\, and MASS MoCA. \nKeerati’s work has caught the attention of the dance world and her unique perspective offers a truly extraordinary opportunity for dance to become something beyond movement\, but translate as a message to audiences. The question is then\, what will Keerati say with this work? Be the first to know and include your energy in the studio as she creates this ballet.

SUMMARY:LAB: Graham-based Modern (Beg)
DESCRIPTION:This 3-hour beginning level modern dance workshop introduces the foundations of Graham technique. We begin with a short warm-up to help lengthen and ground our bodies. We then dive into the codified Graham exercises\, beginning with floor exercises – bounces/breathings\, spirals in 3s & 6s\, seated contractions\, deep stretches\, turns around the back\, pleadings\, etc. \n*Recommendation: If you have difficulty sitting on the floor with your back straight up and legs extended out in front\, we recommend that you bring a yoga mat or towel/blanket. These items may be folded and placed under the seat for floor exercise modifications.
