SUMMARY:Breaking Boundaries 2026 Audition
DESCRIPTION:Breaking Boundaries 2026 is a Student Choreographed Dance Concert presented by the Grossmont College Dance Department.  This concert will be held on the Performing and Visual Arts Center stage on December 3-4-5\, 2026.  Dancers interested in performing must participate in the audition held Friday\, August 28 2:00-4:00 PM in building 24 room 271 at Grossmont College.  During this audition\, dancers will learn short phrases from four different choreographers and perform the material in front of a panel of student choreographers.  If selected to perform in the concert\, dancers must enroll in a performance course and at least one dance technique course offered at Grossmont College.

SUMMARY:AADF2026 Dance Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:This year\, we’re kicking off the festival with AADF2026 Dance Film Screening at MCASD in La Jolla! Come watch beautiful dance films made by AAPI artists\, as well as international films by Asian artists. A panel discussion will be held immediately afterwards\, along with an opportunity for audience members to mingle and chat with the artists. \n2 Audience Choice Awards and 1 Critics Choice Award (jury panel) will be given. Winners will be announced on the last day of the festival. \nCome early and enjoy the art museum before the screening. All AADF2026 Dance Film Screening guests receive free admission on that day to view the MCASD galleries.

SUMMARY:AADF2026 Collaborative Residency Showcase
DESCRIPTION:After months of research and exploration\, the Collaborative Residency choreographers’ work culminates in a final presentation held during AADF2026. The format of this showcase is left open to the choreographers – they may present near-completed works\, they may present their research in the form of a lecture/demonstration\, or they may choose an audience participation format. \nOur AADF2026 Rising Artist Mentees will also present their short works alongside the Residents. \nFor all\, this is a presentation of what they have excavated for themselves so far\, and it will most likely be the starting point for deeper work in the future.

Through detailed instruction\, guided practice\, and open discussion\, students will deepen their understanding of the technique’s athleticism\, precision\, and expressive range.\n\n*Recommendation – Bring a water bottle and light snack. There will be a short 10 minute break.\n\nCOURTNEY GIANNONE\nCourtney Giannone is a dancer\, Cyr wheel artist\, instructor\, and choreographer based in San Diego. Originally from New York City\, she holds a BFA in Dance from Fordham University and The Ailey School. Her performance credits include Queen of the Night\, Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris\, and companies such as Company XIV\, Malashock Dance Company\, STREB\, and Diavolo. A certified Horton instructor through The Ailey School Pedagogy Program\, as well as a certified GYROTONIC® and Cyr Wheel instructor\, Courtney teaches nationally and has presented her choreography at festivals\, theaters\, and educational institutions across the United States. Passionate about preserving the legacy of Horton Technique\, she is honored to share its athleticism\, musicality\, and expressive range with dancers and to continue this tradition in Southern California.

DESCRIPTION:We will once again close out the festival with our Mainstage Showcase. Last year\, audiences walked away with so many wonderful things to say. Sharing our stories of the AAPI experience proved moving and important work. AAPI audiences felt seen\, while others discovered how different and nuanced our experiences are. \nA curated evening of live dance\, invited dance makers will share personal works that touch on their experience of living multi-culturally. These AAPI choreographers represent different cultural backgrounds and create work in various dance disciplines. Each are inspirational and accomplished artists in their own right. Together they will present an evening of profound sharing and deep questioning. We hope audiences will come away with a richer understanding and appreciation of our AAPI communities and identities.

SUMMARY:LAB: Graham-Based Modern (Beg)
DESCRIPTION:This beginning level modern dance workshop is rooted in Graham technique. We begin with a short warm-up to help lengthen and ground our bodies. We then introduce the codified Graham exercises\, beginning with floor exercises – bounces\, breathings\, spirals in 3s & 6s\, seated contractions\, deep stretches\, turns around the back\, pleadings\, etc. Transitioning to standing\, we move to center work – plies\, brushes\, changes around the ankle\, and a center combination. As time allows\, we’ll end with exercises and phrases across the floor – triplets\, prances\, jumps\, etc. Through focus on technique\, we’ll develop strength and deeper understanding of Graham technique\, which has its own unique movement language. \nThis class is geared towards both beginning dancers and more experienced dancers who are new to Graham technique. \n*Recommendation – If you have difficulty sitting on the floor with your back straight up and legs extended out in front\, we recommend that you bring a yoga mat or towel/blanket. These items may be folded and placed under the seat for floor exercise modifications.
