SUMMARY:Rhythm of the Heartbeat with Azul Lopez
DESCRIPTION:During our practice\, we will center the movement that keeps us alive\, our breath and our heartbeat. Allow for the sound\, vibration\, and beat of my medicine drum to connect to the beat of your heart. I will facilitate breathwork\, guided movement that can be done sitting\, laying\, or standing. I will invite people to move freely and intuitively towards the end of class. This class doesn’t require any previous experience or specific abilities. Everything I guide will be offered as invitations and the ultimate encouragement is for participants to sense for guidance from their bodies. I will also invite people to connect to their ancestry\, as many cultures have connected to the medicine of the drum for hundreds of years. This is a space to honor emotions like grief and rage due to all the colonial violence in the world. It is also a space to dream\, be in the present moment\, and celebrate that we are still alive. \nAccess\n\nFace masks provided by DISCO RIOT\nThis class is open to people of all movement levels and abilities to attend with the invitation to move sitting down\, laying down\, or standing up at any moment. Participants are welcome to move outdoors in the patio if possible as well if needed.\n\nDISCO RIOT classes are on a tiered payment scale ($10-30) because we believe that class should be affordable and accessible. No one is turned away for lack of funds. Please reach out to Nicole at education@discoriot.org for a waiver code. \nIn alignment with the values of DISCO RIOT\, this class centers access\, bodily autonomy\, consent\, and the cultivation of safe(r) community space in an ADA accessible studio. During the RSVP process\, there will be a chance to share any access needs you may have. Please reach out to Alyssa at operations@discoriot.org for further accommodation inquiries or requests. \nIf you have any questions about our classes or educational programming at large\, please reach out to Nicole at education@discoriot.org. \nLocation: The studio is located on the second floor of 1100 Kettner Blvd (accessible by elevator). The entrance to the building is through the glass doors on the corner of Kettner and B St. (in front of the street light). There will be a DISCO RIOT team member at the entrance to let you in. There is a 15 minute grace period from the start of the event. 15 minutes after\, there will be no admittance into the building unless communicated in advance. Please email education@discoriot.org if you are running late. \nPublic Transit: We highly recommend taking public transit. The studio is directly accessible by trolley\, bus\, and coaster. We hope you’ll consider taking advantage of this infrastructure! MTS Trip Planner \nParking: Downtown parking can take time! Please reserve 15-20 extra minutes of your commute to find parking and make your way to the building. If you are able to\, consider carpooling and walking in groups at night. There is FREE street parking on Sundays and Monday-Saturday after 8:00pm\, as well as attended parking lots\, and public transit. \nTeaching Artist – Azul Lopez\nAzul Lopez (they/them) is a queer and gender expansive somatic practitioner\, artist\, and deathcare worker of mexican nationality and Indigenous roots. They hope to help people connect to their bodies and express their emotions through somatic practices and movement medicine. Azul’s intention is to help people \, take up space with their bodies\, express themselves\, and remember their power through movement. They often play their medicine drum to help participants connect to their heartbeat and life force. Their movement and facilitation practice is influenced by nature\, latin dance\, stimming\, martial arts\, Indigenous movement medicine\, and somatic practices. They have been providing 1:1 services and facilitating group workshops for our queer community for the past 6 years. \nLEARN MORE & RSVP

It will include a 2-hour Countertechnique® class followed by a 1-hour session of reflection and application of information into action. SUMMARY:POP IN / POP OUT: PRACTICE with Zaquia Luisa
DESCRIPTION:PRACTICE is a four-hour workshop that folds together breath\, yoga asana\, guided movement improvisation\, meditation\, and rest into one continuous inquiry. Each modality informs the next as we return to a few focused questions about the balance of embodied and energetic depth and stability: What does it mean to go deeper without losing ground? How do we stay steady and responsive? Where does curiosity about sensation or intensity serve us\, and where does it pull us away from stability\, subtlety\, and rest? \nExpect an unhurried practice: grounding through breath and asana\, opening into improvisational exploration\, settling into meditation\, and ending in deep rest. \nOpen to all\, though prior yoga and dance experience is helpful. While the studio has some mats and props available\, please bring your own yoga mat and any props you may have (for yourself or to share) such as blocks\, yoga strap or scarf\, yoga blankets\, bolsters\, etc. to ensure maximum possible support! Come dressed in layers. \nSchedule \n10:00-10:15am: arrival \n10:15-11:00am: opening circle + guiding questions for practice \n11am-1:00pm: practice (breath\, movement\, mediation) \n1:00-1:15pm: bio break \n1:15pm-2pm: integrate\, reflect\, discuss\, close \n\n\nZaquia Luisa (she/her) \nZaquia Luisa (MFA\, E-RYT) is a dance artist invested in movement as an act of reclamation and world-building. Originally from San Diego\, Zaquia is the founder and Director Emerita of DISCO RIOT. In addition to creating and performing her own work\, she serves as a Lecturer in Dance Practice at UC Santa Barbara\, Resident Curator at ODC Theater (San Francisco) and RADFest (Kalamazoo)\, and facilitates creative projects and professional development for artists through her company\, Ephemeral Artery.
