Our Mission
TILTshift Dance aims to build relationships and community through the medium of contemporary dance. We believe in the many ways people can engage with dance – learning, practicing, creating, and collaborating. Through shared movement, we believe people practice empathy, experience catharsis, and develop a deeper sense of humanity. As individuals build relationships, communities build deeper ties both within itself and outwardly with others.
Who We Are
TILTshift Dance is a collective of collaborating dance artists, teachers and makers, that was originally founded in 2015 in San Francisco as a vehicle to share and promote our collective works and teachings. In 2019, our Founder/Director Joyce Lien Kushner returned to her hometown of Del Mar, bringing TILTshift Dance with her. We now practice, teach, collaborate, and engage with the San Diego dance community.
What We Do
As dance makers, we create works for stage, film, and site specific. As dance teachers, we offer classes in modern, contemporary and conditioning/fitness. As dance educators, we hold workshops in choreography and encourage dialog through facilitated “wrecking” events. As community driven dance artists, we provide opportunities and space for other dance artists to work on their craft, to dig into the creative process, to collaborate artistically, and to tell their stories in their own voices.
In partnership with bkSOUL, TILTshift Dance co-produces the annual Asian American Dance Festival (AADF), San Diego’s first and only full dance festival that centers AAPI artists, voices, and communities. Along with the festival, AADF programming includes a residency/internship program, annual workshops/symposium, and networking series.
