Asian American Dance Festival celebrates our AAPI communities, by providing a platform for AAPI dance artists to tell our stories in our own voices. We hope to share these stories with each other and with the greater community, fostering deeper empathy and understanding.
As immigrants who were colonized at various points in history, Asian and Pacific Islander Americans are highly diverse and hail from a multitude of heritages and experiences. We have gathered in our own spaces, differentiating ourselves within own ethnic, cultural, and generational communities. These differences, often overlooked in discussions of race and ethnicity, have become a source of trauma between generations and to finding our sense of belonging as Asians and Islanders in American society.
Through the medium of dance, AADF seeks to create an avenue for Asian/Islander Americans to explore, share, and tell our own histories. Through this work, we believe we can grow and heal together, creating more resilient connections inside and outside of our communities, and find our sense of belonging as Asians/Islanders and Americans.
